Humanitarian Surgical Missions

The photographs and videos below were taken during humanitarian surgical missions in Uganda, where Dr. Margolis annually leads a team specializing in the repair of vesicovaginal fistulas. Through his longstanding work with the nonprofit organization MedLend, Dr. Margolis provides surgical care to women suffering from these debilitating injuries while helping expand access to specialized treatment in underserved communities. A key focus of each mission is the training and mentorship of local Ugandan surgeons, equipping them with the skills and expertise needed to perform fistula repairs independently and sustainably. This commitment to education and capacity-building helps ensure that high-quality fistula care remains available long after the mission teams have returned home.

2023 Medical Mission Update

During MedLend’s medical mission to Uganda in February 2023, Dr. Margolis partnered with two Ugandan surgeons whom he has mentored over the years and who have since become highly skilled experts in fistula and urogynecologic surgery. This collaboration reflects MedLend’s commitment not only to providing surgical care but also to building sustainable local expertise through education and mentorship.

Learn more about MedLend’s recent partnership with the Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) and the Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital:

  • Women in Southwestern Uganda Find Support to Battle Urogynecology Disorders, Thanks to MedLend

  • MUST/MedLend Collaborate on Fistula Camp to Treat 54 Patients

These initiatives highlight the profound impact of international collaboration in expanding access to specialized urogynecologic care while strengthening the skills and resources of local healthcare providers.
